Guest post of the week by Roscoe Harris

I am planning the perfect vacation; however, I am having a hard time deciding the perfect location. I would like to visit Panama City Beach, Florida or Aspen, Colorado. Although either location would provide for a getaway, each location is very different and would result in a different vacation experience. Things to consider when deciding upon a vacation location would include weather, activities available, and expenses involved. I must contrast each location in order to make a decision on my vacation destination. I knew I had to take these matters into my own hands and research each thoroughly. I turned on my direct TV, I turned on the discovery channel. The discovery channel went into depth with different places to visit and things to do at each. I took each place into consideration when planning my trip. I can’t wait to travel and see the places of the world. I’m so thankful I finally have the time to enjoy the things I have always wanted to.

So the repair technician for the microwave oven came out yesterday and pronounced the microwave oven officially in critical condition. A part needs to be ordered and it will take several days for the part to arrive. When the part arrives he will call me to schedule a time to come back out and fix the microwave. Yeah, right. Thoughts race back to the time when my dryer broke and a part had to be ordered. That time the part was sent to the wrong place and after waiting six weeks with the patience of a saint the dryer was eventually fixed. Will it take that long to fix the microwave?

Well, I asked the technician if the part could be shipped to me directly and then I call HIM to schedule the appointment, and he said he didn’t think so. He was very nice (and a cutie too) and PROMISED that it would be less than a week. He gave me some paperwork and went off to his next appointment. I don’t want to say that I don’t trust the guy, but I wrote a note on my calendar to follow up in one week, and then went down into my storage room to pull out my old “college dorm” microwave that had been gathering dust for the past several years and brought it upstairs. I’ll be using that to cook my meals until my “good” microwave is up and running. Sometimes it makes sense to be a little bit of a pack-rat!

Coming home and finding the two cheesecakes that I ordered online at Cheesecake.com had been delivered was the highlight of my long hard day. The receptionist at work is off on maternity leave and they are having a hard time finding a temp to come in and take over for her until she comes back in a few weeks and we have all been doing what we can in order to keep the office running in her absence. It has a been a wake up call to us all on how much we all rely on her and how much she does each and every day and we are more than ready to have her come back and we will show her a lot more respect and less attitude after this experience.

Anyway, the only thing that I was asked to bring to Easter dinner this year is cheesecake. Last year I surprised everyone with one and it was a big hit and now it looks like it will be our Easter desert tradition, which is fine by me. I love cheesecake, any kind of cheesecake and cheesecake goes with just about everything.

Don’t you love extended warranties?

I was cooking dinner last night in the microwave oven. The timer told me that the meal was half cooked and it was time to stir it. As I opened the microwave I discovered that the dish was still very cold! I checked all of my settings on the microwave to make sure it was set on “high” (it was) but the food was not getting hot. I reset the microwave again, started it up again and let it run for another ten minutes. The light was on, and I could hear the microwave humming, and I went back to doing something else, hoping that all was well.

When the timer beeped I went to the microwave, opened it up, took out the meal, and was quite disappointed to find that it was still cold! Not a happy camper, I can tell you that! I immediately put the uncooked microwave meal in the refrigerator, pulled a saucepan off of the pot rack, put a couple of inches of water in it and put it on the stove top. Then I dropped in a couple of hot dogs and while they were cooking pulled out the extended warranty information from the filing cabinet. After eating dinner I called the telephone number from the extended warranty information and made arrangements for a technician to come out and take a look at the microwave.

The life of a student is traditionally looked upon as a time in which everything is taken at a relaxed, easy pace, with an extensive social life, travel during the summer breaks and some exposure to learning how to tackle life’s challenges interspersed with occasional study. Whereas the reality is considerably different, there are times where saving time, effort and energy is a necessity. After long days in the lecture theatre and with an evening’s study plan to adhere to, spending time in the kitchen preparing a meal is not always possible. For any student, the acquisition of a CDA microwave can ensure that all your catering needs are met; and all within one compact, space saving unit.

Within any student residence there is likely to be a host of modern electronic equipment and gadgetry that reflects the age and lifestyle of its occupant. CDA appliances are designed and manufactured to the industry’s highest specifications and are of modern, sleek design. CDA appliances perfectly complement the modern fixtures and fittings of any student accommodation with their hi tech features and sleek contemporary designs and – crucially – provide a quick and easy cooking facility. Choosing a façade of sleek stainless steel or stunning black transforms a kitchen or living accommodation into a hive of catering activity.

Living the life of a student is one where lifelong friendships are forged through regular social activity. It will not take any student too long, however, to value the friendship of their CDA microwave just as much as it consistently provides easy drinks, meals and snacks, is always there at the time of need; and will never let you down. After a long day studying or hard night partying, the CDA microwave is fresh and ready to provide you with that much needed sustenance whether it is a quick microwave meal, reheating something made earlier; or cooking or grilling from fresh. The importance of a balanced diet, especially when studying and undergoing mental fatigue, is not to be understated. Fish, as every diligent student will know, is considered the best ‘brain’ food and should be incorporated into the diet at every opportunity. A CDA appliance will ensure your brain is fed the appropriate nutrients and assist in your learning process! It is easy to wave goodbye to endless takeaways and ‘just add water’ snacks, and the initial outlay is soon recouped.

Students are renowned for their diligent cleaning routines and housekeeping skills though, sometimes for us all, repetitive cleaning and washing up is a chore we could all do without. Having a microwave that is simple to wipe down, has an easily removable and washable glass turntable and a side or drop down door that allows superb interior access saves valuable time that can be used more productively elsewhere.

Never again, no matter what the demands on lifestyle, need a student worry about the necessity to eat interfering with their schedule.

Contribution by Stevie Kirby

My mom lives so far out in the country that she doesn’t have access to too many things. The closest grocery store is about 50 miles away from her house. I don’t know how she does it, but she loves it out there. I could never be that far away from convenience! The utility company doesn’t even offer internet connections out there, so she had to get wild blue satellite internet to keep in touch. I will never understand why after so many years of living in Chicago mom felt like she needed to move to the country. She raised my sisters and I to be city girls through and through, and then all of a sudden she was sick of the lifestyle. I’m supportive of her decisions as long as they make her happy. She comes to see us pretty often anyways, so the way I see it, she gets the best of both worlds. She has her peaceful country life, and then she can come and see her children and grandchildren in Chicago whenever she wants to get back to the faster pace.

Living out in a rural area, the importance of visable street signs becomes more important than someone living in an urban area might realize. After all, when one is travelling in the city, road signs are only one city block away from where you are. In the country, the “blocks” can be several miles long. So if one of the street signs at an intersection is missing, a traveler that is not used to the area can easily get lost. One of the things that really bothers me about street signs is that often times the sign at an intersection will only name one of the roads. There have been many times that I have been at the mercy of rural street signs and ended up going hours out of my way because the signs were inadequate.

Even more important, are the traffic signs such as the yield, stop, one-way, and caution signs. There is one intersection near where I live that some jokester keeps stealing a stop sign AND the sign that identifies the name of the roads. Although I know that I am supposed to stop, and the names of the roads there, it is a difficult intersection that could end in disaster, with bodily injury or death. I wish that the jokester would leave the signs alone!
