Boating Operating Under the Influence is the biggest cause of boating deaths in the state. People get drunk and don’t put on their life jackets and then they do something stupid with their boat, fall out and drown or worse yet crash into another boat or a dock or heaven forbid a human being.
With so many more boats and jet skis being used each and every year and so many of those people drinking while enjoying some fun in the sun it’s no wonder there aren’t even more accidents happening, all though believe me there are way too many as it is. I’m so glad that they are starting to crack down on this people that really should no better than to drink and drive, whether it’s on the road or on the water.
When I was a kid, my parents used to take the whole family on vacation to a beach where there frequently were stinging jellyfish. The only thing was, they (we) called them “Sea nettles.” There were other creatures in the water that we called Jellyfish, but those didn’t sting. I do recall how much those stings hurt! And the sea nettles ranged in size from as small as a quarter to over twenty feet long!
I can remember the summer when I turned fifteen. That was the summer when I learned to water ski. I had a group of friends that I went water skiing with, and we skied in those sea nettle infested waters. I got stung so much that I eventually became immune to the pain! Once when I climbed into the boat after having water skied as much as I wanted to ski my friends gasped at all of the stripes of stings on my body, but I didn’t feel a thing!
My folks said that they were told that sprinkling Adolph’s Meat Tenderizer on the sting makes it feel better, but I never tried it. By the time they learned about that treatment, I had become immune.
Now that I’m older and not involved in water skiing, I don’t go in the water anymore if the “sea nettles” are out; I don’t want to take the chance that the immunity wore off, and I do remember that the sting IS very painful.
The summer Olympics are in London this year and all my friends are watching the different events on TV every night. I actually have three different friends who have gone to London to watch some of the events, and I have one friend who lives over there and is going to as many events as she can manage, although it is a hardship for her to take off from work to attend. But she says that this is a chance of a lifetime and that she wants to make the most of the opportunity to see world class competition.
One of the guys that I went to high school with is a fan of swimming and both of his sons compete in swim events, although they are not qualified to compete in the Olympics. They are just big fans of the sport and they wanted to have a chance to see Michael Phelps break the world records, if he can. From what I understand, this is the last time Phelps can compete and he will be retiring after this.
It was great hearing from my BFF today with some good news for a change. She lost her husband last year due to a heart attack and it has really torn her and her kids up, rightfully so. Money has been an issue since he passed, but she finally got some insurance money and she was able to buy a much needed new car, a brand new Scion FR-S that she sent me a picture of today in an email. It’s not exactly a family car, but her mini van hopefully will last for a bit longer to handle all that mini vans are made for.
Her new Scion is red, just like the one pictured below and a stick shift, which she has always enjoyed driving ever since I’ve known her. I’m so happy that she finally got a car that she really loves, as much as she is on the road these days she really deserves to be behind the wheel of a car that she really loves and looks good in as well. I don’t think her red hair clashes with it one bit!
March means a lot of things to me, such as the new day to set your clocks forward for Daylight Savings Time, the first day of Spring, March 20, and my brother’s birthday today. I always call my brother on his birthday to check on him and wish him a happy birthday.
Today when I called, he was all excited about some tickets to a basketball game. For a lot of people, I guess the month of March only means, March Madness as the college teams all fight for their rankings at the end of their season.
