Yuck! Makes me think twice about hotels, that is for sure!

I was thinking about buying some new glassware for our kitchen, and so I was searching the Internet for some new glasses. I found this instead! I know it is an old story, but it still freaked me out a lot!

Toxic shower curtains

Wednesday, May 20th, 2009

I was reading an article in the LA Times about how recent research has determined that some new shower curtains give off toxic chemicals for up to an entire month after they have been opened. Not all, but many shower curtains are made with PVC, a type of vinyl that has been linked to many health hazards. Some shower curtains are made from a safer ethylene vinyl acetate, and some are made from fabric.

I think that in the future, when I buy a new shower curtain (or curtain liner!) I will look carefully at the label and see what it is made from before I buy it! If it’s made from PVC, I will be putting it back on the shelf!

Chip, Fries, and carcinogens

Friday, April 24th, 2009

I was reading on the Yahoo news that a settlement was reached in a legal case of the state of California vs four major snack food companies, H.J. Heinz Co., Frito-Lay, Kettle Foods Incand Lance Inc. The suit was brought forth in 2005, and it was regarding the fact that these companies had unacceptable levels of carcinogens in their potato chips, and had failed to indicate that fact on their product labels.

The state also sued McDonald’s Corp, Wendy’s International Inc., Burger King Corp, KFC, and Procter & Gamble Co for essentailly the same situation with their french fries.

These companies were fined a lot of money and they agreed to either lower the levels of carcinogens or change their labels, so the consumers are aware of the carcinogens. How do you change the labels on french fries?

Why are these carcinogens being allowed in our food in the first place?
