When is it ok to lie?

I was asked recently if I’m ALWAYS honest. As a general rule, I’d have to say “yes but….” and the “but” is there because I will admit that sometimes I will tell a little white lie if it prevents someone’s feelings from being needlessly hurt. For example, if a co-worker recently got a hair cut and they ask me if I like it (and I don’t like it at all) I MIGHT say “yes” to keep them from running into the ladies room crying. If someone spends hours cooking a special meal just for me and it doesn’t come out quite perfect I MIGHT lie and say it’s “great!” because I want to encourage them to keep cooking for me.

However, if the truth is important, and truth usually IS important I will tell the truth. For example “did you do such and such” I will tell the truth. If it is a family member and we are home and haven’t left the house yet I WILL tell them if an outfit is not flattering. If we have alreadyleft the house, though, I’ll keep quiet. Timing is important, and so is tact.

I think you should always tell the truth – especially if one of your favorite friends asks you for your opinion of whether or not an outfit is flattering (if you are shopping with her at the time.)
